Leaving Florence along the via Bolognese you reach Pratolino and it is from here that the visitor can start to trace the heritage of the Medici family. The Medici, originally from the Mugello owned vast acres of land, houses, towers, villas and castles. Continuing along the via Bolognese, once you have gone through the village of San Pietro a Sieve, where there is the16th century fortress of St. Martin, built by command of Cosimo - the first Grand-duke to protect the Mugello valley, you reach Scarperia and its 14th century Palazzo dei Vicari .This building whose facade is adorned by the coats of arms belonging to the Vicars, whose origins date back to the Florentine republic houses the Museo dei Ferri taglienti - a collection of sharp iron Medieval war weapons. Scarperia is also well known on account of the large quantity of feasts, exhibitions and village sagre (local gastronomical feasts) which are organised every now and again throughout the spring and summer.
